Where is Jalandhar ?

Jalandhar is located on the intensively irrigated plain between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. The city is well connected with  major road and rail connections.

The Jalandhar District consist of 5 tehsils/subdivisions viz. Jalandhar-I, Jalandhar II, Nakodar, Phillaur and Shahkot. Besides, there are 5 sub-tehsils, viz. Adampur, Bhogpur, Kartarpur, Goryan and Nurmahal. The district is divided into 10 development blocks, viz, Jalandhar East, Jalandhar West, Bhogpur, Adampur, Nakodar, Shahkot, Phillaur, Nurmahal, Lohian and Rurka Kalan. According to 2000-2001 figures of District Statistical Office, the district has 956 inhabited villages.Bilga is the largest village in Jalandhar district

Jalandhar was the capital of Punjab from India's independence (1947) until Chandigarh was built in 1953.Jalandhar is situated at 710 31’ East and 300 33’ North at a distance of 146 kms from state capital Chandigarh. It is at a distance of 350 Kms from Delhi on Delhi-Amritsar Highway. It is surrounded by Ludhiana district in East, Kapurthala in West, Hosiharpur in North and Ferozepur in South. It is well connected by road and train. Nearest Airport is RajaSansi Airport, Amritsar at a distance of 90 kms.

Why is it named Jalandhar ?

As per one legend it is named after Jalandhar, a demon king, who finds a mention in the Puranas and Mahabharta. According to another legend, Jalandhar was the capital of the kingdom of lav, son of Rama. According to yet another version Jalandhar is said to have derived its name from the vernacular term `Jalandhar’ means area inside the water, i.e. tract laying between the two rivers Satluj and Beas, still another name of Jalandhar had been Trigartta, as it was waters by three rivers, Satluj, Beas and Ravi

According to 2001 Census provisional, the area of Jalandhar District is 3,401 sq. km According to 2001 Census provisional figures, the total population of the district was 19,53,508 persons (10,26,535 males and 9,26,973 Females). .Jalandhar has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 72%. In Jalandhar, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age

The city is well known for its production of sports equipment, leather goods and rubber goods, auto parts. Many major leather manufacturers are based there. Many major sports equipment manufacturers such as BAS, BDM, Cosco, JJ Jonex, Spartan and F.C. Sondhi, PAUL TRADERS are based there. In sports goods, some the world's most well known line for football, cricket, and hockey equipment are made in Jalandhar. Major sports giants such as Adidas, Reebok, Dunns, and Mitre outsource from Jalandhar.
Jalandhar is the world's biggest manufacturer of leather tool pouches and aprons with major American and European customers buying from factories in Jalandhar.
Jalandhar is also famous for its surgical tool industry. Jalandhar produces a large number of surgical tools. Big companies like Camlin outsource its production here. The city boasts of having the largest number of hospitals in Asia. A place called Basti Sheikh has got many cottage projects.
Jalandhar also has the biggest printing industry in India. Major publishing and advertising companies like, MBD, Aay Bee advertisers have their main offices in Jalandhar.

Jalandhar is famous for its sports industry, but very few know the name of Hindustan Hydraulics who pioneered the manufacturing of high-tech CNC machines for sheet metal industry. The company has its customers not only in India but in countries like Germany, Holland, USA who are better known for the manufacturing of machine tools around the world.

 

Jalandhar is also quite known for its electrical goods industry. Manufacturers like Standard Switchgears and Apex Electricals, located in Jalandhar, have been producing world-class electrical switchgears for over three decades.

 

The city is the media and mass communication hub of the region having the regional headquarters of the national television and radio channels.  A number of popular Punjabi folk and Bhangra singers belong to this city including Apache Indian, Hans Raj Hans, Jagjit Singh,Jasbir Jassi, Jazzy B, Salim, and Sarabjit Cheema, MalkitSingh,Bhagwant Mann. Some Bollywood singers that have come out the city, including the legendary K.L. Saigal. Popular sports personalities include Harbhajan Singh, Mohinder Amarnath, Pargat Singg,Great Khali.
